A week ago the Wall Street Journal featured an article by Whit Stillman in which he lists five “essential books about Hollywood”. He writes more about them there, but for future reference the books are:
The Genius of the System by Thomas Schatz (1988)
The Parade’s Gone By… by Kevin Brownlow (1968)
When the Shooting Stops … the […]

Stillman was quoted on the New York Post’s ‘Page Six’ yesterday:
“I’m doing a film set in Jamaica in the early ’60s about the gospel church and the music scene from pre-reggae days, including ska,” Whitman told Webster Hall’s Baird Jones at the party for “Grace Is Gone” at Osteria Del Circo. British producer […]

The New York Post reported this week that Dylan Hundley, who played Sally Fowler in Metropolitan and The Last Days of Disco, is producing a low-budget film:
Hundley is in town shooting BuzzKill, which she describes as “a cool little comedy road film.” The low-budget indie is about a struggling writer, played by Daniel […]

Yesterday Keith Smith asked if anyone knew of a Wall Street Journal article Whit Stillman wrote a few years back. Eric Burritt has tracked down three articles written by Stillman for the paper:
‘Suffering Sundays’ (12 Mar 1999)
‘Book Tour Confidential’ (29 Sep 2000)
‘The Fortunes of Fantasyland’ (3 Nov 2006)
The middle one is unfortunately behind the Journal’s […]

I recently noticed an interview with Stillman from 2000, by Gerald Peary, which wasn’t included on this site until now. He talks about The Last Days of Disco, With Cocktails at Petrossian Afterwards: “The humor is like the 1920s, The New Yorker when it was funny.”

Eric Burritt writes to point out there’s an audiobook of Cocktails at Petrossian at Audible.com, read by Whit Stillman. It currently costs US$4.59 and lasts 15 minutes “unabridged”. I’m guessing then that this is a short story, rather than the full novel The Last Days of Disco, With Cocktails at Petrossian Afterwards.
Eric also ovserves that […]

Gawker’s reporter at Time magazine’s party to celebrate the “Time 100 — the Most Influential People in the World” was sharing her table with an unexpected guest:
At dinner, we were seated way up in the third tier, at Table 35 (out of 36), along with a producer from CNN, a Canadian gossip columnist, […]
I’m guessing there may be a few more of these coming up, but the New York Post has a brief interview with Stillman regular Chris Eigeman on his starring role in the new film The Treatment.
When the film was screened for a roomful of psychiatrists, he even got diagnosed: “A bunch of them […]

Eric Burritt writes to say of the recently released German version of ‘The Last Days of Disco’ on DVD:
The German DVD has Dolby Digital 5.1 sound (English track is included), 16:9 and 1.78:1 aspect ratio, and has subtitles in 10 languages (Spanish and French not included). It has great picture and sound.

The Reno Gazette-Journal has a very brief chat with Whit Stillman to ask him what he’s been up to.
Of the scripts he’s been working on recently he says:
“The first of them, a story set in Jamaica in the early 1960s, should go before too long. Thanks to the producer Ed Pressman, I’m also […]
