Last Days of Disco review

French DVD cover

Les Derniers Jours Du Disco

DVD Times has a fairly lengthy review of The Last Days of Disco because of the recent release of the film on DVD in France.

The Last Days of Disco has been out of print on DVD in the US for quite a while now — commanding extremely high prices on eBay — and has never been available on DVD in the UK. This budget edition is released in France by Warner Bros. as Les Derniers Jours du Disco and, barring a few translated captions, it is almost entirely friendly for English language viewing. The DVD is in PAL format and is encoded for Region 2.

They provide a link to the Amazon.fr page to buy a copy.

The launching of the French edition is an excellent one. Living in Barcelona, Spain, now I can at least accede to this version meant for the PAL region 2; I only miss the addition of an option for subtitles in Spanish. Or is a PAL 2 Spanish DVD edition to be launched any soon? (Yeah, I wish)

  2. Raymond says:

Hi, I have a quick question: who sings the Italian or Spanish rock and roll song that’s played as Ted and Fred make their way to the picnic in Barcelona? This has been bugging me for years – it’s not on the soundtrack album. Nor is Boogie Oogie Oogie, but Everybody Limbo is … thank goodness.

  3. Phil Gyford says:

    Hi Raymond,

Here’s the list of music in the film, as listed in the ‘Sight & Sound’ review (Feb 1995):

“Queiereme siempre (Love Me Forever)” by G.Lynes, B. Guthrie (Spanish version Ben Molar),

    Hi Raymond,

The specific song is “La Hora del Crepusculo (Twilight Time)” by Buck Ram, Morry Nevins, Al Nevins (Spanish version Ben Molar), performed by Los Cinco Latinos. They are a Spanish group.

I bought the CD on buy dot com or you can find it on amazon. It is cheaper at buy dot com (if you’re in the USA).

The title of the CD is “Recordando” Los Cinco Latinos. The company who produced it is Orfeon.

You are probably already aware of this, but the song is not on the “Barcelona” CD soundtrack.

  5. Carol Henson says:

Thank you, thank you! It’s not my imagination! I purchased the Barcelona CD specifically for the spanish version of Twilight Time and thought I’d lost my mind when the song was not included. I have a copy of the VHS version of Barcelona and paused on the credits just to confirm for myself that indeed Twilight Time was a featured song! Excuse me, I’m off to buy.com

  6. Eric Burritt says:

    You are welcome Carol.
If you’re wondering which “Pennsylvania 6-5000″ version is closest to the one in “Barcelona” (when Ted is dancing and reading the Bible), it is the track from this album: The Original Reunion of the Glenn Miller Band [LIVE]

Since the song isn’t on the soundtrack, you can purchase it on itunes under the song title: Pennsylvania 6-5000 (Live)

I listened to most of the versions and compared them to the film. The one I listed above seems to be dead on as far as the tone and pace goes.

  7. Eric Burritt says:

For some odd reason typing in Pennsylvania 6-5000 (Live) is not working now in itunes.

I tried: Pennyslyvania 6-5000 (Live) and that works great.

  8. Raymond says:

Eric, Phil, thank you very much, I finally got my hands on a copy of both versions of the song.

  9. Brandon Adams says:

Can someone tell me the name of this song in the trailer for barcelona. It is the last song in the trailer.

  10. Eric Burritt says:

The song is “Quiereme siempre (Love Me Forever)”, performed by the group Los Cinco Latinos.

  11. Brandon Adams says:

    You are the man Eric!

  12. Carolyn Williams says:

Anyone know if Last Days of Disco will be re-released in the US on DVD ever again? The prices are so high! I have the VHS but I know it will wear out one of these days. I actually sent a request to Criterion because their Metropolitan DVD was so great.

  13. Chris Berkley says:

It’s in print in Australia (Region 4 PAL) … only has the trailer as an extra feature.
